My research focuses on the geologic and modern evolution of coastal environments with an emphasis on working to better understand the rates, scales and driving mechanisms of coastal change. My work to date includes the study of coastal cliffs and shoreline change, nearshore sand bars, coastal barrier systems and sedimentary records of hurricane overwash. Most recently, I explored linkages between coastal evolution and climate variability in the Pacific Northwest while working in conjunction with the Southwest Washington Coastal Erosion Study. This project demonstrates that the evolution of a barrier system in the U.S. Pacific Northwest is sensitive to annual changes in climate forcing generated by the El Niño Southern Oscillation. In addition to using sedimentological methods such as coring, I often use geographic information systems, remote sensing, and ground penetrating radar to carry out my research.
